Continuing Education Session Options:

Yoga for Cancer Patients; Continuing Ed for Yoga Teachers

In 2016, approximately 1,685,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States. While a multitude of medical treatments are available for cancer patients, the practices of yoga and meditation can compliment a patient's course and help them cope with various symptoms, from nausea, to fatigue, anxiety, sleeplessness and more. We can support those with cancer at diagnosis, throughout treatment, post treatment, and even if and when patients are "cleared" of cancer. In this workshop, you will gain a greater understanding of cancer as a disease, some of the common treatments and side effects, and the mental and emotional state that can accompany the disease. Joni will offer a set of best practices to teach those with cancer, including breathwork, meditation, yoga asana, and mindfulness/positive psychology practices. A handout will be emailed after class however please also bring a notebook and be prepared to take notes. Joni works closely with an oncologist at the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh and has worked with patients for several years. She also brings her masters in psychology to offer insight into the mental and emotional effects of this disease. 
It will cover:

  • Language of Cancer: diagnosis, planning, treatment
  • Working with Oncologists / in a Medical Setting
  • Mental, Emotional, Physical Effects of diagnosis, planning, treatment, recovery
  • Best Practices when working with patients
  • Specifics of Yoga for Breast Cancer

This workshop offers 5 hours of continuing education for Yoga Alliance Registered teachers.

Restorative Yoga & Relaxation Training, Continuing Ed for Yoga Teachers

Approximately 40 million adults suffer from anxiety in the United States. And these are just the ones who seek treatment. Learn how to calm and soothe your students' nervous systems gently through simple relaxation practices and restorative yoga postures. You will learn how to teach gentle yoga movements appropriate for all populations, and how to set up and adapt a handful of restorative yoga postures, effectively using a multitude of props, and what to do when props aren't available.

In this workshop, you'll learn:

  • what stress does to the body and brain
  • best practices for calming the nervous system
  • asanas, breathwork, and restorative postures
  • gentle yoga practices

This workshop offers 5 hours of continuing education for Yoga Alliance Registered teachers.

Yoga & Positive Psychology Workshop (continuing ed credits are available)

Feel like you’re getting overwhelmed by stress? Not living the life you wanted? Learn compassion for yourself so you can move beyond your emotional pain, to live a purposeful, joyful, happy life!

This class includes yoga, positive psychology exercises, journaling, laughter, and conscious breathing and simple meditation.

Yoga for Trauma Survivors, Continuing Ed for Yoga Teachers

Approximately 70% of adults in the U.S. (223 million people) have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives. Up to 20% of these people (approx. 44 million) go on to develop PTSD. Various emotional, physical and psychological side effects accompany experiences of trauma and PTSD. The practices of yoga and mindfulness can help people through their coping and recovery in many ways, if taught with awareness and sensitivity. In this workshop, you, as a yoga teacher, will learn best practices to teach those struggling with PTSD and trauma recovery, as well as how to make your classes safe and predictable so as to support this population. Joni Sturgill  holds a master of science in counseling psychology and is an 500 hour ERYT with training in yoga for trauma recovery.
